Finishing Class Lesson 1: The Blow Dryer

To many, blow-drying seems like a simple task. But to me, it’s an art. I am one of those hairdressers who needed a lot of help in this area, especially with all the different textures that are out there in hair. I came to a point in my career where I just couldn’t get the results I wanted with the skills I had. I had originally learned how to blow dry with out the nozzle on, air on full throttle with the head upside down for lots of height and texture for big 80’s hair, let’s face it I needed help. I just couldn’t ignore this problem and consider myself a competent hairdresser. I have always believed that understanding the principals of cut, color, finishing and dressing hair and am confident in doing these things are the components of a competent hairdresser. So I sought out professional help, and now I practice the art of blow drying almost every day. Here is what I learned.

The first component of a good blow dry is the blow dryer. It’s got to be hot, fast and feel light and balanced in your hand. The nozzle attachment is for air control, it’s the length of a hair roller and when we think about drying a section of hair it should be no bigger than the nozzle. This of course is for a controlled polished finish. Taking the nozzle off gives an uncontrolled air flow and a lot less control of the finish. Remember the 80’s? If you don’t, let me fill you in. We threw away the nozzle and just blew dry hair with the head upside down and power blasted it. It gave a lot of volume, but left a lot to be said for shine and polish. Hey if that’s the look you’re going for then, power away. The key here is to know what attachments to use and how to use them in order to get the finish we want.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to teach you how to dry and style hair with a few different techniques for different textures and hair types. The goal is to give you the information to allow you to get the results you want. Please feel free to comment with questions, suggestions, or requests for any looks or hair types I haven’t covered. And remember to check back for future lessons.
